SPM Top Scorers' Recipe For Success - Patience And Constant Study

PUTRAJAYA, March 12 (Bernama) - Support and encouragement from parents and teachers as well as perserverence, patience and constant study are keys to success for 2007 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top achievers.

Azali Azlan, who scored 20 1As and one 2A, attributed his achievement to his patience, which he said, gave him the inner strength to overcome the challenges in life and also in his study.

"For the pain and hardship I have to go through, I always believe there is light at the end of the tunnel," said the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Yan student, who was presented with the "Tokoh Nilam" award by the Malaysian Examination Council.

Azali, who wants to be a professor, said he was active in co-curriculum activities and did not have fixed study hours.

"I didn't want to be pressured by a timetable and only study when I wanted to. What is important is to have that self-motivation," he told reporters when met after the announcement of the 2007 SPM results by Education director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom here today.

On his reason for taking 21 subjects, Azali said it was not because he wanted to up the record of previous SPM top achievers.

"It is for my own satisfaction and for my teachers and parents," he added.

Meanwhile, Quek Hai Ren, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hwa Lian in Mentakab, Pahang, who obtained 16 1As, said that besides the encouragement from parents and teachers, it was paying attention in class that helped him to do well in the examination.

"I really paid attention in class and consistent in my studies. Also important is to do all the homework given by the teachers and to read a lot, not just the textbooks," he added.

He said his determination to do well in the SPM examination was prompted by his desire to pursue studies in science engineering, either in the United States of America or the United Kingdom.

He said a visit to an education carnival in Kuala Lumpur where he came to know on the huge expenses needed for one to pursue studies overseas, also prompted him to study hard.

"I realise then that I need to get a scholarship to study overseas and the only way to achieve it is to study hard and do well in the exam," he told Bernama in a telephone interview.

Quek, the second of four siblings and currently taking a A-Level programme at Taylor's College, said students should not be embarrassed to ask their teachers on lessons they had difficulties understanding.

Besides the compulsory subjects, Quek, who aspires to be a successful entrepreneur, also sat for the Principles of Accounts, Economy, Arts and Chinese Literature papers.

In KELANTAN, N. Puveneshwari, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Yahya Petra I, Kuala Krai who scored 1A in all the 10 subjects she sat for, was named among the 13 top-achievers for the 2007 SPM in the state.

"I woke up at 4am and studied until 7am before going to school everyday and on weekends, I attended extra classes conducted by the school. Other than that, I did a lot of exercises," she said when met at the state-level announcement of the SPM result in Pasir Mas today.

Puneshwari, whose father is an army retiree, hopes to pursue her ambition of becoming a chemical engineer.

In TERENGGANU, Che Fatin Humaira Che Yusuf, from SMKA Sheikh Abdul Malik in Kuala Terengganu was named the best 2007 SPM student in the state. She obtained 13 1As.

"I did special prayers and read the Quran everyday after doing my revision and also asked teachers and sought help from friends on lessons which I wasn't sure about or didn't understand," she said when met at her school.

Che Fatin Humaira, the eldest of four siblings, is pursuing studies in chemical engineering at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Perak.

In SABAH, Ho Gen Nen, from Sekolah Menengah Lok Yuk in Kota Kinabalu, who obtained 15 As had not expected to come out the best student in the state.

"Getting 15 As is shocking enough although I did put an extra effort to do well in the exam, like participating in group discussions and doing a lot of revisions," said Gen, whose ambition is to be a doctor.

In PERAK, Mohd Amirul Asyraf Mohd Hanafi, the third of 10 siblings was named the SPM top scorer in the state, with 10 1As.

The Kuala Kangsar Malay college student, whose ambition is to be a surgeon, is from Seberang Takir in Terengganu.

His mother, Normah Mamat, 44, who helps supplement the family income by selling "kuih" (local traditional cakes), said she had always prayed for her children to do well in their studies.

"I have no property to give them... I can only provide them with an opportunity to study so they they can have a better life in future," she said.

Normah, whose eldest son is at Universiti Teknologi Petronas and the second, taking up nursing, was present at the announcement of the state-level SPM results. Her husband is an employee at a construction company.

In PENANG, the state's SPM top-scorer Aida Naquaiah Abu Bakar said it was the sacrifices made by her mother in raising her and two other siblings after their father's death that inspired her to study hard.

The SMKA (P) Almashoor student, who has just completed an intensive Japanese and English language course at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, obtained 11 A1s and a B3.

"I don't have a fixed study hour, but I paid attention in class and also attended the extra classes," she said.

Her classmate, Naimah Tahir, who also obtained 11 A1s and a B3, also attributed her success to paying attention in class.

In MELAKA, Muhammad Muhaimin Mohamad of Sekolah Menengah Agama Sultan Muhammad, who obtained 12 1As, said it was the respect for the teachers that made him to study hard.

He said the encouragement and support from parents and friends also pushed him to do well.

Another student, Tung Kong Meng, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi St David, believed that to be able to do well in examinations, students had to understand the subject or lessons taught to them.

"You have to understand the subject, especially for mathematics and science, while subjects like history and biology, they required a lot of reading to be able to remember the facts," he added.

In KUALA LUMPUR, R. Depan, who was named one of the 13 SPM top achievers in the Federal Territory, attributed his performance to two hours of study daily since he was in Form Four.

He was at his school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Setapak Tinggi, to get his results and was accompanied by his parents -- V. Ratha Krishnan, 57, a driver, and K. Vally, 54, a nurse at a private hospital, and brother R. Viknes, 22.

Depan hoped to get a scholarship from the Public Service Department to pursue studies in chemical engineering.

Also named SPM top scorers were Chan Jing Yan and Tan Yee Jie, both obtained 13 A1s, both from Sekolah Menengah Seri Bintang Utara, Taman Shamelin Perkasa; and Noor Ameera Duasa of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Bukit Nenas.

Thomas Edison Inspired Vision-impaired Student To Excel In SPM

KUCHING, March 12 (Bernama) -- Thomas Alva Edison's spirit of not giving up in developing the lightbulb, provided the inspiration for vision-impaired Loh Wei Siong to score six A1s and two A2s in last year's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

As a special student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Lintang, Loh, 18, said he had to make adjustments to be among the other students at school.

The youngest of three siblings said his strategy in doing well in the exam was to set aside four hours a day for revision, especially in subjects he was weak in.

"Advice and strong support from family members, teachers and friends provided inspiration for me to be determined to excel in the SPM exam.

"I hope to get a scholarship to do law at a local university," he told Bernama here.

Meanwhile, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist Sibu student, Kelvin Wong Xiawei scored 14 A1s while eight students in the state had 13 A1s, 18 (12 A1s), 23 (11 A1s), and 33 (10 A1s).

Three schools, SM Sains Miri, SM Sains Kuching and Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Kuching had 100 percent passes in all subjects.

The SPM results also saw eight rural schools among the top 50 good-performance schools.

Last year, a total of 36,822 students sat for the exam, of whom 33,413 or 90.74 per cent were in national schools, 135 students (0.37 percent) in MRSM and 535 students (1.45 percent) in private schools while 2,739 (7.44 percent) were private students.
