What is GPRS?
GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Services. It
is a more advanced, faster and more affordable way to get
Internet content on your mobile phone.
The previous generation of mobile Internet technology is
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) that works very
much the same as a normal dial-up connection. Users have
to dial up to connect to the Internet, the connection
speed is slow at about 9.6kbps and payment is based on how
much time users spend online.
GPRS technology totally blows this away. The
advantages of GPRS are evident in 3 key areas:
Always-on connectivity
With GPRS, users are always connected to the
Internet; no more wasting time dialing up.
High speed mobile Internet access
The connection speed is almost 10 times as fast as that
provided by WAP, at a blistering 115kbps. This
means you can enjoy new and better applications that the
limited WAP bandwidth won't allow. Your mobile
Internet experience will also be improved as you'll have
access to graphically rich content with full colour and
animation.
Better value
The bill is also calculated differently, as users pay
based on the amount of data they actually transfer over
the Internet (cost per kb), rather than the amount of time
they spend online (cost per minute). It doesn't take a
computer whiz to figure out that this means much better
value for money. |
